SBC has Partnered with Atomic Learning to Provide Online Software Training

Atomic Learning Logo

As part of an ongoing commitment to the integration of technology into courses and professional development, Sweet Briar College has recently partnered with Atomic Learning, award-winning provider of online software training. Students, faculty and staff members will have access to training on over 110 software applications 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Atomic Learning breaks programs down into manageable tasks and explains each task through a one- to three-minute tutorial movie. Users can log on to Atomic Learning to find training on applications such as Microsoft Office, iLife, Adobe Photoshop, Dreamweaver and many other programs commonly used at SBC.

“Our goal is to help schools, colleges and universities prepare students with the 21st century skills they need for their future careers,” says Atomic Learning’s CEO, Dan Meyer. “Our unique training methods allow people to customize learning to their individual preferences. Use the online resources whenever you like, log on to find an answer to a quick question, watch a series of tutorials to become familiar with an application in its entirety, repeat tutorials as many times as you need to—the choice is yours. We’ve found that our method helps people truly learn and retain knowledge.”

Along with a vast library of software tutorials, SBC will have access to other resources to aid in technology literacy, such as professional development workshops and video storytelling resources. To learn more about Atomic Learning, visit:

green computing

Think Pink - Go Green!

Sweet Briar College is committed to play an active role in the fight against global warming. President Muhlenfeld signed the American College & University Presidents Climate Commitment on January 16th, 2007, which promises to take immediate steps to move toward becoming a carbon neutral institution as well as plan and implement changes in the future that work toward the same goal. It is important to keep in mind that you can make a difference when it comes to issues such as energy conservation and global warming.

Technology is an important part of our life, but it is also a constant strain on our energy grid. However, there are ways to reduce the amount of burden our technology puts on our resources. Academic Computing has created a Green Computing web site, with a long list of things that you can do to help our environment. It is available at:

http://www.ac.sbc.edu/green_computing.html

Academic Computing is already implementing many of the suggestions found at the above link to reduce our dependence on energy. Why not see how many of these ideas you can follow to help our campus be as green as possible?

Moodle to Replace Blackboard

Moodle During the summer, Academic computing upgraded the Moodle course management system from version 1.5.3 to version 1.8. This new version offers many enhanced capabilities and improvements. Some of the new enhancements include: Blogging capabilities, new database activity, enhanced quiz question types, and much, much more!

Our Moodle system is currently up and running at:

http://moodle.sbc.edu

If you wish to set up courses on Moodle, contact Tom Marcais (tmarcais@sbc.edu). Training on Moodle will be offered during the summer and winter breaks. On-line training is also available for intstructors.

New Printing Policy

Due to a significant increase of paper use in the labs, Academic Computing has implemented a new printing policy. The lab budget only allows for one paper load per day. Each tray in the printers will be filled to capacity with paper only once a day. Once that is gone, you must bring your own paper if you wish to print.

Paper can be purchased from the Sweet Briar Book Shop (M-F 8-5, Sat. 10-4) or the Book Shop Café (M-F 8-10, Sat.-Sun. 10-4).

Please follow these guidelines when printing, as cooperation among lab users is crucial to ensure that work is printed on one's own paper.

Printing on Your Own Paper - Mac OS X
These instructions pertain to printing on the Macs in the Fletcher Lab, Benedict Lab, Cochran Lab or the Smith Lab.

Printing on Your Own Paper - Windows XP
These instructions pertain to printing if you are using the Windows operating system via the Parallell's software package, which is installed on the Woody and Smith Lab machines.

Poster Printer

Academic Posters Printed Here! Academic Computing is pleased to announce the purchase of a Hewlett-Packard Designjet 500ps large-format color poster printer. This printer is available for academic use (faculty/student presentations in the classroom or at official academic events) by faculty, students and staff. Please note that "academic use" does not include the creation of promotional and advertising materials.

For detailed instructions on having a poster printed, please read and follow these MANDATORY guidelines.
